Questions to ask a copywriter before hiring them
You found a copywriter who would be perfect for your brand. Whether this is your first time working with a copywriter or you've done so in the past, you probably will have questions. You will probably not know what to ask either, and that is fair too. A great copywriter is not cheap, so it’s important you feel like your money was well worth the investment. Better yet, you should feel like your copywriter should be charging a lot more.
As a Copywriter, I am an expert at anticipating the questions potential clients may have at any point in the process. Any new questions, I either add to my FAQ section or address them beforehand. To have a successful project with a Copywriter, you must understand their value and how the process works. I have compiled a list of questions to ask a copywriter you may want to hire for your brand. These are questions that may not be on their website, but are important for them to answer.
What do you enjoy most about your work as a copywriter?
I love this question because it lets me go back to why I chose marketing as my career. Talking about my love for marketing is nothing I could ever get sick of. Why this is an important question for you is that you’ll be able to have the confidence to know this person wasn't to do a good job. You can trust they aren’t secretly b.s.ing you. Also, it’s a much friendlier way to ask if they know what they are doing without being an asshole. Nobody likes being questioned about whether they can do their job. However, in the world of AI, I can’t blame you for at least being curious.
Why did you choose this industry or niche?
Now, if you’re hiring a Freelancer, they are likely a specialist, and that's why you want them. It’s important you hire someone you are confident can talk all day about their expertise. If they go on a tangent, then that’s a bonus. They really love it. Again, this isn’t to trick them into an uncomfortable situation, but see where their head is at.
How can I best communicate with you as a client?
This isn’t about asking how you will give feedback on your copy drafts. This is about understanding their communication style and how they handle that.
Can you tell me about your favorite project?
Now, if this doesn't put the biggest smile on their face, I don’t know what will. One thing I know about freelancers is that we love to humble-brag about our work. This is a career we chose, so everything is personal. The answer also gives you a peak on how you both would vibe if you decide to work together.
What can I do on my end to make this a great experience for both of us?
Yes, you are the one hiring them; you are their client. But this project is for your brand. So creating a dynamic where they feel confident writing copy for you is a 2-way street. Everyone knows what it’s like to have a client or customer from hello to the point where the money is not even worth it. Don’t be that person.
Now, if you were expecting questions like “what is your client process like?” “How do you want to receive feedback?” “Do you offer payment plans?” Then you shouldn’t have been hiring this Copywriter in the first place. These are questions that should’ve been answered throughout their website. A Freelancer that is serious about their business is going to know the FAQ’s clients have and beat them to it. They are going to make the hiring process seamless. If you get to the Discovery Call and don’t even know how much they charge, then the whole call could be pointless.
This Q&A session is about determining whether your copywriter will add value to your brand and not take anything off your plate. You need an expert who doesn't play around with their work. They want their clients to be satisfied because they care.
Speaking of caring, I care ~ *Beyonce voice*. I care so much that I want to be your Copywriter. If you are in need of a copywriter for your CPG brand, you have come to the right place. Take a look at my drink menu, I’d love to make you a Mocktale.
